How to Dry Cocoon/Dehydrate Cocoon in a Dehydrator
Introduction to cocoon:
Cocoon refers to the cocoon of silkworm. Cocoon drying is a process and management process that uses heat to kill the silkworm pupae in the fresh cocoons and dry them into dry cocoons, while maintaining the quality of the cocoons and preventing mildew. Silkworm cocoons are dry, commonly known as drying cocoons. In addition to killing silkworm pupae in time, preventing emergence and steaming and mildew of the cocoon layer, the main purpose is to remove most of the water in the fresh cocoons, especially drying the pupae. The water content of the fresh cocoon layer is about 11-13%, and the water content of the pupae is about 74-79%, and it is better to dry to about 15%. If it is too dry, the hydrophilicity of the cocoon layer sericin will decrease, resulting in poor relaxation.Cocoon drying process:
Before baking silkworm cocoons with a heat pump dryer, the amount of cocoons laid is based on the thickness of the cocoons. Generally, the height of the cocoon should not exceed 2 and a half cocoons in the horizontal position. The hot air circulation dryer with vertical penetrating airflow should not exceed 3 cocoons. High is better. The main process conditions of cocoon drying are temperature, humidity, wind speed, cocoon laying amount and drying time. Among them, temperature, humidity and wind speed have a greater influence on the drying speed and quality of cocoons. Must comply with the law of moisture evaporation in each stage of drying. For example, the temperature should be gradually reduced from high to low, the humidity should be gradually increased from low, and the wind speed should be gradually decreased from high to low.The cocoon drying process is mainly divided into three stages: preheating, constant drying and deceleration drying:
1. Preheating stage: Heating the fresh cocoon, and the heat energy penetrates into the cocoon cavity through the cocoon layer to kill the pupae, so that the moisture of the pupae enters the evaporation period. At this stage, the temperature should gradually rise.
2. In the isokinetic drying stage, the pupa body has the most water evaporation and the fastest evaporation rate. During this period, the diffusion rate of the pupa body moisture is in equilibrium with the evaporation rate of the cocoon surface. The temperature of the cocoon layer is lower than the air temperature in the drying room, and the temperature of the pupa body is lower than the temperature of the cocoon layer, until the pupa body water diffusion rate. It gradually lags behind the evaporation rate of the cocoon layer surface.
3. During the deceleration drying stage, the moisture in the cocoon gradually decreases and the evaporation rate is correspondingly slower. During this period, the temperature of the cocoon gradually increased to close to the temperature of the hot air. When the inside of the pupa body begins to evaporate, the decelerated drying is transferred from the first stage to the second stage until the end of the drying.
Precautions:
Silkworm cocoons are mainly composed of cocoon layer and pupa body. Generally, the weight of cocoon layer in fresh cocoons only accounts for 18-24%. Fresh cocoons contain a lot of water. Usually, about 60 kg of water is removed when 100 kg of fresh cocoons are baked to dryness. Under normal circumstances, the water content of the fresh cocoon layer is about 13-15%, and the water content of the pupae is about 73-77%. Therefore, the drying of silkworm cocoons is mainly to remove the water in the pupae, while the cocoon layer only loses a small amount of water.
